First explored by Captain John Smith during the 1610s, the area was sold to John Alexander for 6,600 pounds of tobacco in 1669. Alexandria was a central warehouse and shipping for tobacco and later wheat. In 1779 Alexandria was incorporated as a town. From 1789 to 1846 Alexandria was part of the District of Columbia, after which it was ceded back to Virginia.
