Bilbao is built on both sides of the Nervión River. On the western bank (right) is Bilbao’s old city and includes historic residential and commercial areas and some famous landmarks like the San Antonio, San Nicholas, and Santo Juanes Renaissance-style churches. There are series of seven famous parallel streets named “Siete Calles” that lead to the riverbank.
On the easter bank (left) of the river, there are factories and residential neighborhoods. In 1890 few smaller towns were added to the city and became the modern part of the city and include banking, commercial center, and the county government’s offices.
