Cali was inhabited by indigenous tribes before the arrival of the Spanish conquistador Sebastián de Belalcázar. In 1954 a major change happened when the Cauca Valley Corporation changed the course of Colombia’s second major waterway the upper Cauca River to generate electrical power, prevent flooding, and farming irrigation. The area saw a large growth in agricultural products include sugarcane and coffee and, more recently, cotton and soybeans.
Cali is the abbreviated type of the official name of the city Santiago de Cali. “Santiago” respects Saint James whose feast day is commended on 25 July. The inception of “Cali” originates from the nearby Amerindians the “Calima”.
