Camagüey was founded in 1514 as Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe on the northern coast. In 1528 after many attacks from Caribbean pirates, it moved inland and was names Camagüey. In the seventeenth century, the city was redesigned like a maze after Henry Morgan burned the city. The confusing layout of winding alleys and only one exit was done by design to help defend the city against attacks.
