The Carmel area was first platted by Daniel Warren, Alexander Mills, John Phelps, and Seth Green in 1837. The area was first named Bethlehem, but when the Post Office established in 1846, It was named Carmel because Indiana already had a post office called Bethlehem. Carmel was officially incorporated in 1874.
