Founded in 1836 by Antoine Le Claire, Davenport was named after an English sailor that served in the U.S. Army during the War of 1812, Colonel George Davenport. The city was incorporated in 1839 while governed by the legislatures of the Wisconsin Territory. In the mid-19th-century the city had grown with the arrival of the railroad and steamboats.
