In the 17th century, the area was explored by French voyageurs, including Daniel Greysolon, Sieur DuLhut who claimed the area and maned it Duluth. Duluth was incorporated as a town in 1857 and as a city in 1870. During much of the 20th-century, the city was an industrial port town, housing several mills, a cement plant, and a U.S. Steel plant.
Duluth today is a regional major transportation center including northeastern Minnesota, northwestern Wisconsin, and part of western Michigan.
