Minot was founded in 1886 as a tent town and was named as a tribute to H.D. Minot, a railroad investor. The town was incorporated in 1887. In 1893 the Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad reached the town. In the early 20th century the city saw spectacular growth and was nicknamed “the Magic City.”
