Mitchell was first settled as a town in August of 1879. It was incorporated in 1881. The city was named after the President of the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad, Mr. Alexander Mitchell. It is the county seat of Davison County, which was organized in 1874.
Mitchell is home to the Corn Palace, which is beautified with different shades of dried grains and corn making wall paintings. The building looks like a large palace with domes and minarets on top. One can visit the Dakota Discovery Museum, the Enchanted World Doll Museum and the Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village to provide insight into the history of the area.
