In 1766, after the second attempt, the settlement was established and the town was chartered in 1785. It was named for its founder Colonel Zackquill Morgan. The town spurred growth in 1886 with the arrival of the railroad. Morgantown is the home of West Virginia University, the largest institution of higher education in the state.
