Rapid City was built up in 1876 during the Black Hills gold rush. John Brennan and Samuel Scott plotted the site of the present-day city in February 1876. It was later renamed Rapid City after the Rapid Creek that travels through the domain. The primary railroad arrived in the region in the late 1880s. The city was incorporated in 1882.
