San Fernando was named after Ferdinand the Desired son of Spanish King Charles IV. The city’s economy is based on the oil and gas industry. In the early 20th century, rich oil fields were discovered and a large refinery was built. San Fernando is called “Industrial Capital” because of its proximity of petrochemicals and Iron industries to the Pointe-à-Pierre oil refinery.
The first settlers arrived in 1595. The city is situated between the Guaracara River and the Oropouche River. San Fernando became a city in 1989.
