Prior to the arrival of the Spanish Conquistador Pedro de Alvarado in 1520, the city was called by local indigenous Xelajú and was considered to be the capital of the Mayas K’iche kingdom. Quetzaltenango was named by the Spanish colonials. Most of Guatemala’s population calls the city “Xela”.
In the late 19th century, coffee plantations in the area helped the city’s economy. Because of Quetzaltenango’s high altitude, the climate is much different than the tropical climate in other parts of Guatemala. Thanks to the rich Quiche Maya atmosphere mixed with touches of Spanish colonial architecture the city became a new tourist destination.
