San Nicolas was named after a Mr. Nicolaas van der Biest (1808–1873), who possessed a major bit of the land there. Landowners were then tended to by their subordinates by their first names went before by “Shon” meaning master. So he was called Shon Nicolas, similar to other zones. It is believed that Spanish influence was the reason for the change of name from Shon Nicolas to San Nicolas.
