Tupelo is situated about 90 miles south of Jackson, Tennessee, and about 95 miles southeast of Memphis. Tupelo was at first known as Gum Pond along the Mobile – Ohio Railroad. The city was renamed Tupelo after a large number of tupelo or black gum trees in the area.
