Tuscaloosa was Incorporated in 1816 by Thomas York. The city’s name is derived from Indian Choctaw chief Tuscaloosa (tushka “warrior” and lusa “black”). From 1826 until 1846 Tuscaloosa served as the capital of the state of Alabama. In 1865 the city was partially burned during the American Civil War.
The city is home to the University of Alabama (opened 1831), and to this day, the University remains the dominant economic and cultural force in the city. Tuscaloosa is also home to the first Mercedes-Benz automotive assembly plant in North America and the Mercedes-Benz Museum.
